Prati and Senik examined data from four longitudinal surveys to find out how our current feelings affect our memories of past happiness,
Specifically, Prati and Senik analyzed existing data from the German Socio-Economic Panel’s German Welfare Survey, focusing on responses from 11,055 parties between 2006 and 2015, each year, participants conveyed, how satisfied they were with their lives on a scale of 1 to 10. In 2015, respondents were also asked to select one of nine line charts that best, represented the trajectory of their life satisfaction over the past decade,


The charts determined by the participants broadly reflected their past responses, Prati and Senik write in the article, People who reported higher current life satisfaction, were more probable to choose a graph illustrating continuous improvement, and People with average satisfaction were more probable to choose a graph, that showed little improvement, and people with low satisfaction with their current life were more likely to choose a graph that showed declines in their well-being,
